The Latest Vikings Free Agency Update

I don’t know what “phase” of free agency you would call this. Fifth? Twelfth? I don’t know. Regardless, there are still some free agents out there that could be brought in to help the Vikings.

At this point, the many of the players listed could probably be had at a discounted price, which could make them even more attractive to the Vikings. Here’s my list of some of the top players at various positions still available:

J.P. Losman –Brad Childress has vowed to bring in one more quarterback to compete in training camp. Also, it was rumored two years ago that Childress was interested in trading for Losman. So now that he can take a look without giving up draft picks… why not?

Warrick Dunn – You want a guy to teach Adrian Peterson how to have a long productive career? You want a guy who is one of the best character players in the league? You want a guy that rushed for over 1,100 yards last season? Then Dunn is the man for you. Even though he’s 34 years old, he would be the best third string running back in the league if the Vikings were to sign him.

Torry Holt
– Many Vikings fans would love to see this happen. Holt has had an incredibly productive career that took a bit of a dip last year. The big questions is if that lack of production last year was a reflection on Holt himself or just how bad the 2008 Rams were. Holt would have to learn a new system if he joined the Vikings, but he’d provide a solid threat across from Berrian regardless. If the Vikings are at all interested, they better move quick because Holt has already met with the Jaguars and Titans.

Orlando Pace
– I previously wrote that I do not think the Vikings would have too much interest in Pace. I still think that. However, there is no denying that he is by far the best offensive tackle left on the market and would be a significant upgrade to Ryan Cook. At age 33, Pace would be only a short term fix. Also, since he’s missed 25 games in three years due to injury, the Vikings would still need to look at tackles in the draft.

Cato June – At age 29, June still has some gas in the tank. He is used to the defense run by the Vikings and could serve as either a great backup or a decent starter. June may even prove good enough to push Ben Leber down the depth chart.

Freddie Keiaho – Keiaho was a very solid weak side linebacker for the Colts. If he signs with a new team, he’s best suited for a cover-2 defense and could really help the Vikings out with depth and on special teams. At age 26, Keiaho is just now entering the prime of his career.

Will Demps – The Vikings are in need of some depth at the safety position. While Demps had a down year in 2008, he is only two years removed from his Pro Bowl season. He would be an upgrade to Eric Frampton and would be able to push Tyrell Johnson during training camp.
